A Book of Poetry

○Self-Introduction

My name is Daiki Fukuda.  I am 19 years old.  I live in Oizumi, Gunma.  It is about 89km from Tokyo.  I am the second year of Gunma University student.  I study Education and major in English.  I want to be an English teacher at an elementary school in Gunma.  Gunma University is in Maebashi, Gunma.  It is about 50km from my hometown, Oizumi.  I spend from 60 to 90 minutes going to the university by my car.  So, if I have a class on early morning, I have to get up at 5:00am.  It is too early for me to get up.

○Introduction

As you know, there are 10 poems under this.  They are my experience which I have ever studied English.  When I was ten years old, I began to study English on radio.  I have studied English by textbook which is published by NHK.  I was interested in studying English, so I like English.  When I was a junior high school student, I was good at English, and often got 100 scores on regular tests.  I tried to take EIKEN, and got up to pre2 degree.  After that, it was fun for me to learn grammar in detail in high school, and I study English harder.  Now, I study syntax and other more academic knowledge of English.

○The first English lesson at Gunma University

A large classroom

Many tables from front to back

Many students who I don’t know

I’m nervous

I wonder what I study here

What can I learn in this English class?

ALT comes in the room

The English lesson begins

This is the time when I was the first year of Gunma University student.  It might be in April.  I felt everything was unfamiliar with me.  Therefore, I was so nervous.  I had few friends in that time, so those who were around me were almost strangers.  In addition, my textbook was all written in English.  I was surprised because it was different from textbooks which I have ever used.  There were many new things around me.  I was certainly nervous, but it had not only negative meanings in that time.  I was also excited in studying English in the new place.

○The first English test at junior high school

I study English hard.

I prepare for English test well.

However, I’m nervous.

I don’t know what questions are on the sheet

Can I do it well?

I don’t know, but do my best

This is the time when I was the first year of the junior high school student.  It might be in May or June.  I remember that I learned alphabet and be-verb such as am or is.  I had some confidence because I have been studying English since I was ten years old.  Therefore, I think I got a better score than others at least.  However, I was also nervous because I did not know what questions there were on the test and how I could answer them.  It takes it for granted that it was the first time for me to take English test.  Therefore, I did not know all of things.  I prepared for it very well, but I was nervous.

○The first Studying Abroad

My first time

to go abroad for a month

at the age of nineteen

Melbourne, Australia

Everything is fascinating me

Food, people, building, traffic, animal, wind, sunshine, flower, beach and…

Making a lot of friends

Talking with them everyday

Hanging out with them everyday

Studying English together everyday

Discussing many topics with my classmates in English

On the last day

I don’t wanna leave here

I don’t wanna say good-bye to my friends

This is the time when I was still the first year of Gunma University student.  This is the first time to go abroad.  I went to Melburne, Australia for a month during Spring vacation.  The aim of studying abroad was to improve the ability of using English, especially speaking, and experience different cultures from Japan.  When I approached there, everting I saw made me excited.  There were many things which I had never seen in Japan.  I spoke to many people and made friends.  I often went out with them after school.  I often ate dinner with them.  I had a very good time with them.  On the last day, my friends came to me for saying good-bye.  I did not want to say it, but I had to.  I hope to see them again in the future.

○A conversation with ALT

“Hello!”

“How are you?”

“I’m fine, thank you. And you?”

“I’m fine, too. Thank you.”

I always say to her at first

I don’t know what I say.

I’m not confident about talking in English.

It’s challenging

This is the time when I was a junior high school student.  ALT was a woman.  I had a few times to talk to her in every English class.  I always said “Hello!”, “How are you?”.  It was OK up to that, but I did not know what I said from that time.  I could talk freely to her, so I had to give some contents.  However, it is often said that Japanese students are trained in terms of reading and writing in English at school well, but they are not trained in speaking.  So, I am not familiar with talking in English.  I am not confident in talking to others in English.  Therefore, I felt it was challenge.

○The Practice of the first Interview Examination of EIKEN

The Interview test of EIKEN is for the third grade

The first time to speak English in interview

I don’t know what I do

So, I buy a textbook for practice

Open it and get to do some questions

“No.1 Please look at the passage, …” …

I’m wonder what I say

I don’t know what I say

Questions leave me alone

It’s difficult to tell my idea in English as soon as possible

I have to practice hard

This is the time when I was the second year of a junior high school student.  The examination of the third grade for EIKEN has the first examination and the second examination.  The first examination has a writing test and a listening test.  The second examination has an interview test.  I have never take an interview test, so I did not know how I could answer some questions.  Therefore, I bought some textbooks for an interview test.  I started to practice, but I could not answer each question well.  I felt that I needed more practice for passing the test.

○To make a skit with group member

At junior high school

As 1st year student

I make a skit with friends.

It’s written about hamburger shop

I’m a role of clerk.

We make a funny story.

We practice hard.

At last, our skit make classmates excited

This is the time when I was the first year of a junior high school student.  I had to make a group which had four or five people and make a skit.  A theme was not especially mentioned, so I can make a skit freely.  My group decided to make a skit about hamburger shop.  My group had four people include me, so two of them were a role of clerks and the other were customers.  We wrote the situation that customers bought hamburger, french-fries and a bottle of coke and then ate them outside.  We did a lot of practice.  As a result, we succeeded in showing our skit

○Listening to English Songs in the beginning of Class at Junior High School

Some men’s voice, sounds of guitar and drum, melody

They are from CD player

English songs

Maybe, “Let it be”…

My teacher likes Beatles

I like, too

My feeling is calm

The color of image…pale orange or red

His voice makes me calm

I like his voice

I like this time

I hope this time continues forever

This is the time when I was a junior high school student.  I always listened to English songs in the beginning of English class because my English teacher made students listen to music as worm up activity.  He had a lot of CDs such as Beatles, Monkey Magic and One Direction.  Songs were changed regularly.  We could listen to new songs per month.  I like Beatles.  He also likes it.  When he played “Let it be”, I felt happy and enjoy listening to it.  I hoped this time continued forever, but it never.  I felt sad in terms of ending it, but I was looking forward to listening to it next time.

Week4 Assignment

POETRY WRITING TO EXPRESS LOVE IN THAILAND IN ENGLISH: A SECOND LANGUAGE(L2) WRITING PERSPECTIVE is written about what benefits to L2 poetry writing has by Pisarn Bee Chamcharatsri.  The study is conducted that four Thai L2 learners write poems in Thai and English.  The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between love as construct of emotion and writing in undergraduate Thai students.  After writing poems, researchers interviewed them about how they felt in poetry writing in Thai and English.  They are questioned whether they told their love through poetry writing successfully or not, what difference between Thai and English they felt through poetry writing as L2 learners and what they think about poetry writing in Thai and English as L2 learners.  Some of them are prefer to write in Thai because Thai is a mother language for them and they know much more vocabularies to tell about their thought and feelings in Thai than in English, the other prefer to write in English because they use English daily.  It is found from this that those who are not familiar with emotional expression in English cannot write poetry in English well though they are L2 learners.  However, one of them left interesting comments after writing poetry.

“I felt that using English in expressing this emotion [love] is better because I mainly read English books, listened to English songs.  It could be that I liked to listen to English songs more.  I knew more English words and understood emotions that the songs tried to convey.  Those songs had good and deep meaning.  I meant I was more used to the English langusge.”[i]

The subject preferred to express her emotions in English because she felt that she had more exposure to English materials including “English books” and “English songs”.  In other words, English materials motivate L2 learners to use English.  According to Chamcharatsri, the use of creative writing, poetry writing to be more specific, helps L2 writers to be more focused and more reflective on significant language experiences; creative writing also allows L2 writers to shift the focus of their writing from structural to content concerns.  That is to say that poetry writing helps L2 learners improve their English knowledge and skills.

The ability of L2 Poetry writing

Poetry is a literacy text that presents the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of the writer through a self-referential use of language that creates for the reader and writer a new understanding of the experience, thought or feeling expressed in the text. [1] These days, researches study the ability of second language learners (L2) to express traumatic life experience in poetic forms.  The study shows that L2 writers successfully tell their experiences such negative events through poetry. However, it reveals that positive emotions were used less frequently than negative emotions in poetry because writers should have written about their unfortunate experiences.  In addition, some writers didn’t want to tell about it because they didn’t want to share their terrible event and remember such a nightmare.

Supermarket

Going to supermarket.

No rice.

No food.

No bread.

On the shelf.

Make me surprised.

Hope foods come back to the shelf soon.

I chose this poem from Exploring earthquake experiences: A study of second language learner’s ability to express and communicate deeply traumatic events in poetic form, written by Atushi Iida.  The reason why I was interested in this poem is that it clearly reminded me of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.  After the earthquake, I immediately went to the convenience store near my house with my mother to buy some foods and drink.  When I reached it, I was surprised because the store was devastated due to the earthquake and there were little food and drink.  I sympathized the sentence, Hope foods come back to the shelf soon.

What’s Poetry Writing: Week 2

Poetry is a discourse constructed around the epistemological principal of the unique that provides its readers with specific insights into individualize, personal human experience and linguistic expression.  In other words, poetry is a literary text that presents the experiences, thoughts and feelings of the writer through a self-referential use of language that creates for the reader and writer a new understanding of the experience, thought, or feeling related to in the text.[i]  Therefore, poetry writing is that people create poems on the basis of their experience, thought and feeling.  I think the reason why some people write poems is that they want to share them to other people.  For example, many people in New York, America felt so bad sadness in September 11th,2001.  The destruction of the Twin Towers in New York happened by terrorists, and many people were killed or injured.  Therefore, some people wrote a poem about the accident in order to tell the scene of it and their feelings such as sadness and angry to other people all over the world and remember that happening forever.  In addition, it is important for us to write poetry.  As you know, a poem is the way to tell their experience, thoughts and feelings, and also you can improve your creativity through writing poetry.  Poetry is one of art work.  Therefore, you can learn a lot of things and make your knowledge of creating poetry well through writing poems.  That is a good way to improve your skills.
